Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF)

The TestDaF is a standardized advanced language proficiency test, which satisfies German university language entrance requirements. Other points concerning the TestDaf include:

  • The test is suitable for students aiming at a degree in a German institution of higher education who need recognized proof of their language skills.
  • The test is also for candidates who need proof of their German language skills in their home country. Students can also take the TestDaF in their home countries after completing 700-1,000 hours of tuition.
  • The test is for everybody who needs recognition of his/her German skills and is accepted by employers, universities and various institutions.


Structure

  • Reading (60 minutes)
  • Written expression (60 minutes)
  • Listening comprehension (40 minutes)
  • Oral expression (30 minutes)


Results

  • Candidates can achieve one of three available levels i.e. TestDaF-Niveaustufe 3, 4 and 5 (corresponding to the ALTE levels 3-5).
  • Level 5 is equivalent to the DSH. German universities will accept students attaining level 5 in all four test sections.
  • Students who achieve level 5 in at least two test sections and level 4 in all the others will generally be accepted by universities.
  • Students achieving level 4 in two test sections and level 3 in the others will be accepted for university study provided they also attend a language course.
  • Students achieving level 3 or less in three or more test sections will not be accepted for university study and will need to repeat the test the following year.
